At Grand Republic Milling Company, we’ve turned back the clock on industrial flour to bring you a pantry staple made the old-fashioned way. Over 150 years ago, the world moved away from stone-ground, fresh, whole wheat flour—along with the nutrition and vitality it carried. The shift to shelf-stable, industrial flour made sense at the time: refrigerators hadn’t been invented, and fresh flour spoiled quickly in a prairie cupboard. Replenishing it meant a long trip to town, often by horse, for something used almost daily in every home.

By the 1950s, the post-war boom had brought refrigerators to nearly every household, making fresh flour viable again. But by then, the infrastructure was gone. Tens of thousands of local mills had been replaced by a handful of massive industrial conglomerates, and the art of fresh stone milling was nearly forgotten.

Only in the past decade has it become possible once more to access American-made mills that slowly grind wheat into its most essential, nourishing form.
