We honor the land, the farmers, and the traditions that make our flour exceptional.

Grand Republic Milling Company draws its name in tribute to the Grand Army of the Republic, the original veterans’ organization founded after the Civil War.

Our farming home—the Hull Community in Nebraska’s Panhandle—was largely settled by veterans who belonged to that organization while part of the broader movement westward in search of prosperity and opportunity.

When our founder retired from military service to return to his farming roots, we felt it was only fitting to honor those who came before us—American’s who transitioned from defending freedom to cultivating the prairie.

Founder

Reginald Preston

Reginald (Reg) Preston was raised on his family’s dryland wheat farm in Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska. Learning from and watching his father and grandfather before him, at a young age he was driving tractors, trucks and combines.

Without a gentle nudge, he would have probably never left the farm. With eternal gratitude and credit to his dad who inspired the passion for doing something challenging, and his mom who encouraged going to college, he went off to Iowa State and the Navy after high school. That short 5 year commitment turned into 25 years before retiring from the Navy’s Submarine Force before and returning back to Scotts Bluff county with the family. Reg served as a commissioned officer in the Navy, reaching the rank of Commander, living on both coasts and a couple islands in the Pacific Ocean with his wife Katey and their daughters.

Back to the farm, Reg has the pleasure of walking in his father and grandfather’s footsteps. His grandfather, Bob, was influential in adopting early tillage practices to reduce wind and rain erosion. His dad, Don, was one of the first in the area to experiment with alternative crops to begin breaking up pest and disease cycles that were endemic after 50+ years of monocropping winter wheat. Their eye toward improved farming techniques is the same foundation Reg has built into Grand Republic’s farming practices today - always pursuing ‘better.’

Can you combine responsible agriculture with food production? Can the farmer know the baker, chef, and home cook? OF COURSE! This is where he has placed his focus. Better soil makes better grain. Better grain makes better flour. And everyone should know the farmer. With faint apologies to the industrial food conglomerates who stand between your fork and your farmer, let’s cut out the middle man.

This is your farmer and miller, Reg Preston.
